Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Education
Aboriginal cultural education
Armidale Catholic Schools provides Aboriginal cultural education to support schools in improving the educational outcomes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people enrolled in our schools, while furthering their understanding of Aboriginal histories and cultures.
Armidale Catholic Schools places a contemporary educational lens on focused goals, targets and strategies for the holistic learning and developmental needs of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people. This is a three armed approach encompassing:
- Reconciliation
- Cultural identity
- Education
Armidale Catholic Schools ensures that an understanding of the cultures and heritage of Aboriginal Australia is developed through the implementation of learning programs and experiences based on culturally inclusive pedagogy. Sensitive inclusion of appropriate traditional and contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander material is essential. This allows the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people of Armidale Catholic Schools to be strong in their own culture, languages, histories, beliefs, and lifestyles in a way which affirms their identity, and enables them to operate in contemporary cross cultural environments.
Teaching and learning programs are regularly reviewed to ensure units of work across all stages and KLAs identify ways in which Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives are incorporated respectfully.
Armidale Catholic Schools provides a framework for the improvement of educational and life outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people in which families, who are the heart of Aboriginal life, are visible and vocal. Armidale Catholic Schools strives to promote justice and harmony in educational outcomes through collaboration with community and the Church, following the example of Jesus.
