Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders

The Diocese of Armidale provides Aboriginal cultural education and experiences for all staff and students in order to support schools to improve the educational outcomes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to further the understanding of Aboriginal histories and cultures

The Diocese of Armidale places a contemporary educational lens on sharply focused goals, targets and strategies for the holistic learning and developmental needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people enrolled in our schools. It sets directions based upon three arms:

  • Reconciliation.
  • Cultural identity.
  • Education.

Our Catholic Schools ensure that an understanding of the cultures and heritage of Aboriginal Australia are developed through the implementation of learning programs and experiences that are based on culturally inclusive pedagogy. This allows Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to be strong in their own culture,  languages, histories, beliefs and lifestyles in a way which affirms identity and the ability to operate in cross cultural environments.

The Diocese of Armidale provides Aboriginal cultural education and experiences for all staff and students in order to support schools to improve the educational outcomes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to further the understanding of Aboriginal histories and cultures by the sensitive inclusion of appropriate material concerning traditional and contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and heritage.

Teaching and learning programmes are reviewed to ensure existing units of work in all KLAs at each stage identify ways in which Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander cross curricula perspectives are incorporated respectfully.

The Diocese of Armidale provides an aspirational framework to improve educational and life outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people where families, who are the heart of Aboriginal life, are visible and vocal in the life and work of the community and where the Church follows the example of Jesus to seek justice and harmony with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through educational processes.
